Identity Crisis

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

The perfect read for me is when I get so wrapped up in a book that it almost seems real. All day long, no matter what I am doing, the plot of the book is always playing in my mind. It’s as if I am the lead character and I’m going over everything that has happened to me so far in the book and wondering what lies ahead.

I love to imagine the towns that are described. The houses, the cars, the stores, the people, all come alive in my head and it’s as if I am there and what is happening is happening to me.

Sometimes, the book is so good, that when it ends, I find myself a little sad. It’s like being on a great vacation that ends. The only hope is that it’s a series book and I can simply go to the book store, pick up the next book in the series and get back to my pretend life. The worst is when you have to wait for that next book to be written and published.

I don’t always slip into the mind of the lead character. Sometimes I even find myself in the head of “the bad guy”. And it doesn’t happen with every book. I guess maybe some characters grab me more than others. Maybe that’s a testament to the author and how well they depict their characters. Or maybe it’s just that I identify more with certain characters than others. Which is a scary thought since I just admitted that sometimes it’s “the bad guy” that gets into my head.

I’ve not been able to do much reading lately…pretty much none. But I am in great need of an escape and am looking forward to my next read and hoping that the characters will draw me in and carry me off to another life for a short while. Don’t get me wrong…I love my life. It’s just fun to let my mind wander into another one for a short while.

So here’s my question…you knew it was coming…

Which characters have you identified with? If you could be a character from any book, who would it be? Go ahead, pick a few!

One I read recently, Carolyn Brown's, Getting Lucky. It was one of those books that created such a real world, you felt like all you had to do is get in the car and drive to Texas and you'd find all these people. I loved Julie and especially Alvera.

The world of Pern, created by Anne McCaffrey, is another *place* Ilove to visit periodically. Like a small vacation. I fell in love with Robinton and Ruath.

No matter what I'm doing, I need to read. It refreshes my mind. If I'm busy, it may take me a week to finish the book (where normally I'd have it done in two days or less), but I need the escape. the changing gears, so to speak.

Hope your holidays are grand, Bren. Hope you and your family can all meet for the holidays. We need that loving safety net as much as a good book. :-)

Oh, I want to be Daisy Dalrymple in the mystery series by Carola Dunn. Set in the 1920s, she's the daughter of a viscount, married to a Chief Detective Inspector, who always gets involved in her husband's cases which drives him crazy but he adores her so he puts up with it. :)

I want to be a character in many of the books I read without actually being a character from the book. I want to be me and be in the story, interacting with characters, having the adventures, the love affair, etc. Essentially, I'd kick the heroine out of the book (and out of the hero's arms and bed) and replace her with me. :-) Ok, but in a totally non-creepy way and not like one of those weird movies where the nanny or the roommate wants to take over the woman's life.

Sia,

Getting Lucky sounds like the kind of book I'm talking about. I'll have to check it out!

Sadly, I won't be with my mother and siblings for Thanksgiving. Maybe next year. But I will be spending the holiday with my wonderful sons and husband and his family, so I'll still be sharing time with loved ones. I hope your Thanksgiving is filled with special people and special times!

Tori,

I love that name, Daisy Dalrymple! And the story sounds delightful. How many books are in the series and are they new enough that I would be able to get my hands on them at the local book store?

Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Mary Stella,

As usual, you crack me up! That's a great idea. That should be a book in itself. You could be a character that is always jumping into someone else's book and taking over the story. It's nice that you would be "non-creepy" about it!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I love this, Bren! What fun. I thought about this all day and couldn't wait to get off work so I could share this with you.

My list is rather long so I'll only share a few.

1) Grandma Mazur (Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich) I love her. She's crazy and spunky.

2) Lulu (same series) She's hilarious and comfortable in her own skin

3)Win (Myron Bolitar series by Harlen Coben) witty and fearless

4)Caris (World Without End by Ken Follett) strong, determined, brave

5) Ranger (Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich) He's just fantastic in every way.

6) Meera Brennan (she's the heroine in my Paranormal WIP and I so want to be her)

OMG...I totally forgot one of the big ones!

BARRONS from the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. Why? He's dark, mysterious, sensitive (hard to detect that but I sense that from him) and he's kick ass!

Barb,

Funny, Grandma Mazur and Ranger from the Stefanie Plum novels are both on my list as is Win from the Myron Bolitar series. Oh and I would also have to add Bob the dog from the Plum novels also. He's got it made.

Oh yeah! Bob has the life. All he does all day is eat and poop.

Hmmm. If I really thought about it I'm sure I'd come up with quite the list. But this is sort of a drive by so... I'd want to be Mac from Karen Marie Moning's BLOOD FEVER series. I could do without the fae flesh eating (so gross), but it might be worth it to do the horizontal mambo with Barrons!

Beth,

Aah the things we do for love. What's a little flesh?
I really must pick up this series. It sounds interesting and I probably wouldn't mind the flesh eating...

If not for a long time (I like modern conveniences), then Sherlock Holmes. Amazing mind!

Bren, the Daisy Dalrymple series has 18 books in it. :) And they should be available at any bookstore. I'm pretty sure the older ones have recently been re-released.
