Christmas Collaboration

Wednesday, December 16, 2009
I have what I think is a fun idea! Actually, I sort of got the idea from B.J.'s post last week. I thought it could be interesting to start a story and then have everyone who joins us here at SIS contribute. Not for just one day, but for the rest of the days leading up to Christmas Eve. Each day, I will take everything written that day and post it for the beginning of the next day and then anyone who wants to contribute can chime in.

Any style is allowed: romance, thriller, fantasy. You name it, you can write it. The only rule is that you have to read what was written previously and try to segue from that point. You can twist the story any way you choose. You can add characters, kill off characters if you choose, change it from romance to fantasy...just have fun!

I think it will be interesting to see how the story deviates from what I originally perceived and also to see how very different we each may write from one another. Now, this needn't be a novel. It can be short story. Write as much or as little as you like!

Okay, here goes....

Lily could scarcely believe that it was Christmas time already. The year had flown by so quickly. But she was glad. It had been a horrible year. She had lost her boyfriend, her job, and now, worst of all, her best friend, Snorks.

Not that Snorks had died or anything, she had literally lost him. The last she remembered having him was when she was walking into the toy store to buy a gift for her nephew. He shouldn't be too hard to find. After all, he...

Alright then. It's your turn. I have my ideas for what or who Snorks is and what he looks like, but let's see where this leads. Have fun....

…was a screaming hot-pink fairy. About the size of Tinkerbell of Peter Pan fame. Only instead of dressing in elfish-green, his color of choice was pixie-pink. Snorks thumbed his pointy nose at convention. Snorks dared to be different, unlike Lily. Lily was the perfect lady. Always. She did what was expected of her, said only the most polite and diplomatic things. She always tried to do right, yet everything had gone wrong. Terribly wrong. She’d never been more depressed in all her eighteen years… Where the heck was Snork? She glared at the fanciful toys, the cheery owner of the toy store, and said…

"Have you seen a fairy around here? He's wearing a pink chiffon gown and sporting a rhinestone tiara. He was right beside me when we entered the door, but then I heard him mutter something about G.I. Joe and when I turned, he was gone."

The owner studied Lily carefully and then replied...

"If you wait right here, I'll check the security monitors and see if I can see him. Fairy, you say? Wearing a tiara?"

Lily was no expert but she was pretty sure the owner thought she was completely nuts. The tone of his voice, the rolling of his eyes and the way he drew air circles around his ear with his pointer finger were just a few of the hints. He thought she was nuts? She wasn't the one wearing a multi-colored pinwheel hat on top of her head. As soon as Mr. Head Propeller turned to walk away, she spun on her Jimmy Choo heel and bolted.

She made it as far as the top of the escalator before...

“Where have you been?” Snorks got up in her face, his hot pink wings fluttering wildly.

“Looking for you!” Lily snarled. “Where have you been?”

“I want this. I want it bad,” he told her, tugging on her hair to get her out of the way of the escalator while people behind her muttered and moved around her.

“We’re here to shop for my nephew,” she reminded him.

“This is more important.” He kept pulling on her hair.

“Ow! Hey!” She had to go with him or lose losing a lock of hair. For a little fairy he was strong!

“Ta da!” Snorks flew to one side when they reached their destination.

Lily’s jaw dropped as she stared at his choice. It was …

a wildly colored T-shirt with little buttons that looked like the word frinkle, but it actually said sprinkle. Lilly said," Know way. It cost over 20 dollars." "But..." "NO!" He flew away murmmering something she didn't understand. All of the sudden he came up and yelled at Lily saying,"If I don't get it you will have fire orange hair." Then Lily said...

" Snorks, you know I love you but your acting like a spoiled fairy. This is a time of giving. You should be thinking of others, not yourself."

With that, Snorks took off in a wave of hot pink Pixie Dust. Lily stood there shaking her head. "What am I going to do with him" she thought to herself.

Just then then Mr. Head Propeller came running up to her with a mall cop in tow.

"Great" Lily thought, " Now what does he want."

"Excuse me miss" said the mall cop. "You must come with me right now"

Lily was in a panick. Should she go with him or should she run. Lily did the only thing she could think of. She....

pointed in the opposite direction. "Oh my God. Is that Cher?"

The store owner and the mall cop practically broke their necks craning to get a look at "Cher".

Lily took advantage, hopped on the opening elevator and hit the down button. Thankfully the door shut before the two men could realize she'd duped them. She sagged against the wall, taking deep breaths to calm her frantic heart. This was so unlike her. Lily had never broken a rule in her life. Part of her felt terrible about lying, but another part, a hidden part, felt a slight thrill at being brave enough to do something so thrilling.

The door opened on the garage level. She stepped out and walked the few spaces to her "vintage" Plymouth Horizon. Vintage as in old. This car had been on its last leg for at least the last decade, but somehow her father kept it running for each of his children. She jerked on the handle at least twelve times before the door opened and then climbed in next to one very unhappy Snorks.

She debated on whether or not she should try to cheer him up but in the end decided to let him simmer down first. She eased out of the space, drove down the ramp and turned left towards home. It wasn't until she was halfway there before she glanced in her rearview mirror.

For the third time that day, panic set in. Lying in her hatchback on top of all her junk was a half-dressed...

...incredibly hot, gagged and bound, unconcious man. Lily screamed, Snorks screamed and the Plymouth jumped the curb, nearly hitting the pedestrians who were window shopping before smashing into a light pole and finally coming to an abrupt halt.

Lily looked at Snorks checking to make sure he wasn't hurt.

"What just happened here Lily? Have you lost your mind? Are you seriously THAT angry with me for wandering off in the store?" Snorks snapped.

"Snorks, look behind me," Lily said with a quivering voice.

Snorks turned and let out another shriek followed by muttering and sniveling. His entire pink fairy body was shaking and little flecks of glittery pink sparks were exploding from his head.

"Snorks! Pull yourself together. We have to think quick. People are starting to come this way and we need to do something about this half-naked man in the back!"

Snorks shook his head in agreement and carefully pulled his wand from behind his ear. He held it high in the air, swirling it around and said...

Flying up to the man's nose, Snorks waved his wand, saying, "Abracadabra! Abracadabra!" The man opened deep blue eyes and Snorks scurried back to Lily. "He doesn't disappear and he's awake. What should we do?"

"We have to get out of here." Oh God, what if the copys came now.
