What's Up?

Thursday, April 8, 2010

Good day all. I have been very busy this week with a new temporary job. I lost my job of 8 years due to the business closing. I was lucky to find this current job and hope it leads to something permanent. I am trying to avoid unemployment. It seems like such a hassle to mess with. This new job is fun, but very hard work. We are remodeling the store. I can tell you, my muscles are killing me. We are moving shelves that are still full of merchandise. Moving items and stocking the empty shelves isn't so hard until you get to the bottom shelves. I don't want to look like I'm sitting on the job, so I squat to stock the shelves. My calves are feeling it.

The hours are long, so I'm falling behind on house work and I haven't written a thing all week. Hopefully by next week my body will be used to the job and I will feel like doing more. I'm sure my house and family will thank me for it.

So, what's going on with you this week? Please share.

I don't think I could squat for any length of time to stock shelves. Then again, there's a reason I never worked retail. I'd be dreadful at it.

Hi Tori

I love working in retail, I just hate squating.

BJ,

Sending good vibes your way that you will land a permanent position at the store of your choice!

I've had a very sad week, a long week and an inspiring week. I've been extremely busy with work and personal things so I, too have fallen a little behind on my writing. But I plan to attack it tonight while practicing 2 songs that I'll be singing in front of a bazillion people for a very sad occasion. Wish me luck that I can hold it together and make it through!!!

Sorry to hear about sad things. I know you will make it through the song. Stay strong.

BJ, I hope the fulltime job comes through. They'd be lucky to have you. A tip for when you're lifting and carrying things--always SQUAT (no how much you hate that) and use your thighs to lift. Otherwise you could strain your lower back.

As for me, I'm super busy witha project at the library and also busy promoting my new book, plus researching and writing a new proposal. Oh... and last night I burned my arm with Lasagna. Now I have a welt and a blister. Ow.

BJ,

Sorry about you losing your job and congrats on the new one. Things happen for a reason, right?
I could squat down probably once, as long as I didn't have to stand back up any time soon. Forget about stocking shelves and the like, in the shape I'm in that would kill me!

Barb - So sorry to hear about the sad occasion, but I know you and I know that you can do it. Just do what you're there to do and you can be sad afterward.

Thanks, Chris and BJ. I will try to do just that!

Beth,

I hope at least the lasagna was good?

Very good. Weight Watchers, so also good FOR me. Except for the burn part. At least this time I remembered I'm alergic to latex and used a non-latex band-aid. Otherwise my arm would be looking a whole lot worse! Sometimes I like Lucy Ricardo. *sigh*

Hi Beth

Thanks for the advice on lifting. The only thing that hurts right now is my legs.

From now on, beware the lasagna!

My comment to you is missing. I'll try again.

Thanks for the advice and good luck wishes.

Next time, beware the lasagna!

Hi Chris

Yes, I do believe things happen for a reason. Thanks for the congrats. Standing back up after the squat is hellish.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your other job. After 8 years, that really sucks.

I've worked my share of retail, Honey! Since fashion is a passion for me, all my retail jobs were in clothing stores. Stocking is NOT the easiest job in the world. It's amazing that so many customers look at displays without realizing the work that goes into them. Do the items magically *poof!* appear in the store? Um, not quite. There are people who bust their a-double-S's to put stock out on the shelves, on the tables, and out on the racks.

If it's any consolation, your body will adjust to stocking the low shelves in no time. Trust me.

And, Elle, you'll do just fine with the songs. Sending a big ol' hug your way!
