SIS Barb says…
Any paranormal fans out there? I know I am. I can't explain what draws me the other-worldly realm. Perhaps it's knowing that there's a possibility that there's more out there. More than just us. To believe that it's impossible is in my humble opinion, absurd.

My Pick of the Week: Ghost Walk
A brutal murder. A haunted-tour company. New Orleans. A paranormal investigator and ghosts. Lots of ghosts.

Author: Heather Graham

SIS Bren says…
I haven't been reading lately. Nothing seems to be grabbing me at the moment. But soon, very soon, a book I have been waiting for for years is hitting the shelves! I am so excited and praying that it doesn't disappoint.
My Pick of the Week: The Lost Symbol
I loved The DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons and in 12 days I will be nose deep in The Lost Symbol. I've reserved my copy and I'm ready to delve into the pages of what I hope proves to be an exciting, intriguing, pulse quickening read!
Author: Dan Brown

SIS Beth says…

I have to say, I've been reading like crazy. That’s not to say I’ve tackled a lot of books. Just that I’ve been reading every chance I get . . . And loving it. I’m particularly hooked on Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series and will no doubt go back and read her Highlander series which, I understand, feeds into Fever. I’m also hooked on Charlaine Harris’s novels featuring feisty heroine Sookie Stackhouse. Sookie’s in love with a vampire named Bill. Gotta love that. A vampire named Bill. I just finished book two of the nine book (so far) series.

My pick of the Week: Living Dead in Dallas
The Sookie Stackhouse series is not traditional romance. It's more urban mystery, an on-going series, but it sure has a strong romantic layer. I’m not into vampires, yet I’m pretty hot for Bill and… after reading this installment, Eric. Book two was even sexier than book one and far more intense. The violence was graphic. The premise disturbing at times, yet I still felt… enchanted. Needless to say book three is in my grubby little paws.
Author: Charlaine Harris

I'm super excited about that one too! Can. Not. Wait!

Barb - I'm into ghosts too so maybe Ghost Walk is the first Heather book I should read? I do love her covers, they really catch my eye!

Bren - The publicity for this book is so great I feel like it's a Harry Potter book! Did you see this article on Entertainment Weekly's site? http://shelf-life.ew.com/2009/09/01/today-lost-symbol-dan-brown/

Beth - I think I'd be safe reading the first Harris book after seeing season 1 of True Blood. I'll add it to my To-Be-Read list!

Hi Taylor,

Thanks for the link. I love the codes in Dan Brown's books. On his web-site, danbrown.com, you can get a good look at the cover to this new book. I won't even pretend that I could decode anything on the cover. Maybe I'll have a closer look at it later.

I've got a couple of the Charlaine Harris books on my TBR--how spooky are they? (I'm the hiding-under-the-bed type, you know ;))

I can't wait for the new Dan Brown book but I'll have to wait until our library gets it and I can get my hot little hands on it.

Re the Sookie Stackhouse books, I've kind of gone off Bill but I adore Eric. I want Eric. Okay, so he's a vampire. Nobody's perfect. *g*

I'm re-reading Carol Higgins Clark's Regan Reilly series. I've never read the books in order, so now that I have my own copies of the first four books, I'm reading them in the correct order.

Taylor,

This would be a great Heather Graham book to start with! I hope you enjoy.

Beth,
I think I told you I tried to watch the True Blood series on HBO but it wasn't my cup of tea. However, I've heard great things about the books so I'll give them a try. I may then go back and re-watch the series.

Fedora,

I'm a hide under the bed kind of person too, however I LOVE spooky books. I know, it's weird!!

Hey Tori,

I almost always read books in order. I think its so much better that way. Hope you enjoy your series the 2nd time around.

Barb, Just added Ghost Walk to my TBR pile!

Bren, Taylor, and Tori, Re: the new Dan Brown Book... talk about using hype to sell mega books... This was on Publishers Lunch today...

"Amazon Bought Two Locks to Keep LOST SYMBOL Secure
The New York Times won't be obtaining any copies of Dan Brown's new book from Amazon, where the e-tailer's home page carries a note promoting the new release from Jeff Bezos--who insists that "even inside Random House, only a half dozen employees have been allowed to read The Lost Symbol in its entirety." (Is it supposed to be reassuring that almost no one at the publisher worked with the author on preparing his book for publication?)

Amazon has "agreed to keep our stockpile under 24-hour guard in its own chain-link enclosure, with two locks requiring two separate people for entry." All they know about the book is that "it takes place over the course of twelve hours" and features Robert Langdon. Of course if you want to pre-order it for delivery to your Kindle the morning of release, go right ahead. The print version is No. 1 at the site; the Kindle pre-order is currently No. 64 on the Kindle list."

Fedora, the Sookie Stackhouse series, though a little creepy at times, also has humor throughout as well as romance. I think you'd be okay. ARe those the books you have? Charlaine Harris writes other series, too. Don't know how scary or not those are.

Barb and Taylor, I just ordered the first season of True Blood though the library. It will be interesting to see how I feel about the show vs the books. BJ said there's LOTS of sex in the show. Come to think of it, there's quite a bit of sex in the books, but Harris isn't very graphic in her descriptions, so it hasn't raised my eyebrows in the least.

Tori, although I'm charmed by Bill, I have to say, there were two places in the 2nd Sookie book where Eric 'wowed' me. Big time. I'm interested to see how things develop!

Beth - Isn't it crazy the lengths they've gone to for this book? I don't think they were even that crazy when Harry Potter 7 came out. The lock compound with two-person access is a little absurd for a Dan Brown book if you ask me haha.

I'm with Barb. I've tried True Blood, but it wasn't my cup of tea (or a cup of another liquid, as probably would be appropriate in this case).

Fedora said...

Yes, it's the Sookie books I have a couple of--I'll have to give 'em a try! Thanks, all! :)

I read a variety but I love para too. My pick:

Masters of Time, Brenda Joyce

The Masters of Time are Highland warriors sworn to protect Innocence through the ages. They do not choose their destiny—it is chosen for them. The Masters are medieval men to the core—savage in war, ruthless in outlook, totally sexist in nature, and impossibly powerful—after all, they are descended from the old Celtic gods. And one of their greatest powers is the power to leap through time…

And then along comes a very modern and independent woman…

Just finished the third in the series and loved it. I Love her character Sam (Samantha)Rose. All the Rose women are pretty tough ladies in different way.
