Haunted House!

Monday, September 14, 2009

B.J.'s post last week has really put me in the mood for autumn. All the stuff that comes with it is so appealing - the leaves, the food, the weather, Halloween...

So, I think I am sitting on a gold mine for this Halloween season! Last year, we bought this great house. It's nice and big - fairly new. I never would have imagined that it could end up being a real life "haunted" house. I'm thinking maybe I should start charging admission.

It started with little things. Lights turning on and off by themselves (bad wiring right?), the door that seems to unlock itself (I decided I was losing my mind), and little noises (must be the kids)! Stray shadows here and there can be easily explained too, huh?

Then some spookier events were occurring. Omar and I swear we saw "a figure" one night. It was very obvious that we both observed the same thing at the exact same time. And just ask Brenda if she'll ever sleep in my basement again (which, by the way, is very far from dungeon-like). I don't think she cared too much for the breathing going on in her room. You can ask my friend Donna about it too. She's seen something just like what we did and heard the noises Brenda had experienced. I hadn't told her about any of it!! And I won't even think of telling you about the time I felt like I was being held down in bed - you'll think I am the crazy sister.

On top of that, we have bats in the attic!! There is a small space above my entry that they stay in. Each night at about 9:00 they start to take flight. One by one they wiggle out of a gap smaller than my finger. On busy nights we've counted about 90 bats!!!

Sounds like a pretty good place to start a haunted house tour to me! Start it off with the nightly bat show and then move on to visit our unexpected house guest.

My question of the day : Do you believe in ghosts or spirits or whatever you want to call them? As you can see, I do!

Hi Brandy,

My house used to be haunted until I scared the ghost away. The same things were happening here. Lights turning on or off, doors opening. Until one night I woke up to see someone standing next to my bed. My husband was at work, Bree was with her dad,and Kylie was in bed with me. I reached over to make sure she was still there and then I started to get out of bed to fight the intruder. Just like that he dissapared. I let out a sigh of relief and then yelled at him for scaring me. I told him to never do that again. He hasn't been back since.

Yes, I do believe that houses can be haunted. When I was a kid, we lived in one--for a very short time. My parents quickly decided that these particular spirits were dangerous, after they pulled out two long spikes out of the window that my dad had nailed in to keep the window shut. You see, my brother used the sill to step on to get out of his crib. He was two at the time. Moved the crib, pounded in numerous nails, crib moved back and nails neatly pulled out. Wouldn't have been a problem, except the window was on the second floor.

Spooky! Did it look just like a real person?

I have noticed that there seems to be more "activity" during the times that we have lots of house guests coming and going. I am wondering if the extra people make the spirit sort of uneasy.

Great story! Nails being pulled out is pretty hard evidence.
I would like to think that my "ghost" isn't dangerous. When I felt like I was being held down, though, it was extremely scary. Luckily, my girls haven't seen anything. I've been trying to keep everything a secret from them.

Brandy, Yes, he looked like a real person. Sometimes ghosts are stirred up when people start renovating thier homes. Your ghost could be stirred up by the extra noise that house guests bring with them.

I used to be a total skeptic. I still have never had any personal experiences, though we joke about having a ghost who followed us from our old house to this one.

But one day I started watching Ghost Hunters on the Sci Fi Channel. Those guys have gotten some pretty startling evidence of hauntings. I might have been less believing if they didn't try their best to DISprove these places were haunted. They seem to have a lot of integrity. So I'm slowly coming around to being a believer. :)

Hi Brandy!

Great post. I've stayed at your house numerous times and other than the bats, I've yet to experience anything out of the ordinary. Hmmmm....that's pretty interesting. Maybe I'm a ghost deterrent???

However, I do believe in ghosts and spirits and everything in between.

Nothing spooky happened on this trip other than complete lack of cell service and internet!!!!! Pretty scary, huh?

Enjoyed the trip tremendously but so ready to go home and see Larry and the kids.

have a great day to all!!!

Hi Brandy,

Great post SISta! Although 'm glad you didn't tell me about your ghostly experiences while I was sleeping on your sofa. I wouldn't have slept a wink. I didn't hear or see anything weird, then again I didn't hear you and Omar come in late. I was zonked out!

As for believing in ghosts and spirits, I certainly do. In fact, I have had a couple of experiences. Nothing too frightening, just the kind that make the hair on your arms stand on end.

Still in Wyoming. Head home tommorow. Inspired, but exhausted.

More later!

Barb & Beth,

Maybe Brenda is a magnet. She experienced things two trips in a row! I haven't noticed too much for about a month now.

I am so glad you two are having such a great time. Talk to you soon. Love ya both!!!

Hello Brandy!

I'm so glad you posted that story! You KNOW I believe. You and I talked about being held down. It happened to me when I was on the road singing and staying in a hotel. I had to ask to be moved to another room. It was extremely frightening!

I don't think that I am scared in your house though. The light thing was creepy and the breathing even creepier, but I didn't feel threatened. I say, be very nice to these spirits. I think they come out when I'm there because I am so much fun!

You neglected to mention the fact that one of the bats got in the house! That was so much fun. Not for you, but it was for me! I think for Halloween, you should leave your doors open and see how many will come in! The kids would love it.

Hi B.J.,

I have also woken up to find someone standing near me. Not in this house, but in the house I lived when the boys were young. It was a woman and she was standing near my bedroom door, but facing the boys' door. I felt like she was watching over them. I watched her for a while and then she just seemed to disappear. Spirits are great, when they aren't scary!

Hi Sia,

CREEPY, CREEPY, CREEPY! I would have moved too.
I think it is amazing that these spirits are able to make things move. The energy that they possess is mind boggling. Your story is something right out of horror movie!

Hey Brenda,

Your bat idea is out!!! You know how I feel about those nasty things! They creep me out more than my guest.

I don't feel scared in my house either. Omar says maybe it was keeping me from getting out of bed for a good reason. Like maybe I was gonna get hurt or something if I did. Who knows?

What an awesome post. I love autumn but I love Halloween (and the whole month of October) even more. It's my favorite holiday and month respectively. I've been trying for a long time to have some ghostly experiences like the one it seems you experience nightly and I've yet to match your story!! I believe in all of it: ghosts, ghouls, goblins, the Jersey Devil, everything! I just wish I could run into a few of them. And that 'being held down' experience is something a friend of mine has felt before - her story is quite creepy. Ah, start charging admission asap and I'll be there!!

I totally do. And your story is spooky and... strangely fascinating...
