Whatcha Lookin' At?

Monday, January 11, 2010

I'm curious. Where are you most productive? Do you have an office? A Desk? The kitchen table? A favorite chair? A coffee shop? A bookstore?

Is it quiet? Is there chaos? Music? TV?

What time is it? First thing in the morning? Mid afternoon? Late at night? All day long?

Do you surround yourself with inspiration? Character pictures? Research books? Clutter?

Are you organized? A hot mess?

Me? I've found that I'm most productive sitting in my chaise lounge with the laptop in front of me. I've got my headphones on but my music selection varies each day. Some days it's Mozart. Others it's Boyz II Men, Chris Young, Miranda Lambert, Kelly Clarkson or Willie Nelson. My kids constantly interrupt me and my husband is always asking what's for dinner. But still I manage to crank out more words during those times than when I'm all alone in a quiet house sitting at the new desk.

My 2nd most productive writing time is Monday mornings at Caribou coffee. I'm not sure what it is. I think I just like the vibe.

Another quick question...American Idol starts tomorrow. Will you be watching this season?

On a side note: SIS Bren's dog, Dizzy, is missing. He was staying with some family while Bren and her husband were out of town and he escaped. Brenda has had Dizzy for more years than I can remember. She is doing everything she can to find him. Please send thoughts and prayers her way so that they can be reunited.

Oh no! Let Dizzy come back home.

I work in a comfy chair on my laptop set on a laptop table with the TV nearby since I require noise and visual stimulation. The dogs are usually huddled on my feet unless my tootsies are on a footrest.

There's always a hint of chaos. If it was calm around here I wouldn't know what to do.

Oh no! I hope Bren finds Dizzy safe and sound.

I tend to do most of my writing during commercials at night while I'm watching TV. My computer and TV are in the same room so I just hop up and dash over to the desk. I'd never get anything done during the day because there are way too many interruptions and distractions around here. Too many for me, at any rate.

I don't watch American Idol, so no I won't be tuning in. :)

Hi Linda,

Sounds pretty similar to me sans the dogs.

Calm = impending storm

I'll be sure to pass along your well wishes to Bren.

Tori,

I can totally picture you doing that. It's kind of like a well choreographed dance!

No luck on finding Dizzy yet. So sad.

Hi Barb, The good thing about poerty is you can write anytime, anywhere.

I gave up on American Idol long ago.

Best wishes to Bren on finding Dizzy.

Hugs to Brenda!!!! Sending postive vibes that she's reunited with Dizzy SOON!

As for writing ambiance, Barb. I work best in silence. I have a writing room. On my desk and bullitin board are little things that inspire me. I do my best writing in this room and in silence. Most productive with huge uninterrupted chunks of time.

That said, sometimes I get lonely and want to be near my husband and dogs. In that case, I'll write in the living room on the couch instead. Since the TV, or more specifically 'conversation' is distracting, I put in my ear buds and listen to Pandora Radio. Instrumentals only. Can't deal with lyrics while trying to write my own words. I know. I'm weird.

BJ,

Say it isn't so? You gave up on Idol? Why, oh why?

Do you keep a notebook handy for writing your poetry or do you use any scrap of paper available?

Beth,

Not weird at all. I really enjoy hearing how everyone works. Someday I hope to have an office but even then, I think I'll need some of that chaos Linda was talking about.
The space would be good for inspiration though!

Hi Barb, I keep a notebook handy at all times. Some poems have been written on napkins or what ever is at hand.

I think I quit watching when the year Bo was on.

Thank you for the mention of Dizzy and thank you to all of you for your well wishes! Happily we were reunited a couple of hours ago. What an ordeal! He was out in below freezing temps last night and temps in the low 30's the night before! He's pretty tough for a little fluffy white dog!

As for writing productivity, I write just fine sitting in the living room with the TV going and my husband talking to me and the kids asking me questions. That's the only place I write!

Great news Bren!

I think the smaller dogs are tougher than the big ones.
