What Are You Reading?

Thursday, June 10, 2010
I am currently reading two books. One fiction, the other non-fiction. I find myself reading more non-fiction lately. I guess I'm like my 6 year old, I like learning from books. That is what she said to me when I took her to the library the other day. She is reading five books about science and space.

Back to the books I am reading. The fiction one is People of the Raven by Kathleen O'neal Gear and W. Michael Gear. They are a wife and husband team that write stories based on Native American history. They are both archaeologists and she is a historian. People of the Raven is loosely based on the Kennewick Man; a Caucasoid male mummy that was discovered along the banks of the Columbia River in 1996. The mummy is thought to be more than 9,000 years old.

The non-fiction book I am reading is Women Who Run With Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes,Ph.D. She is a Jungian analyst and cantadora storyteller. A cantadora is a keeper of old stories. From the jacket:

Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. Her name is Wild Woman, but she is an endangered species. Though the gifts of wildish nature come to us at birth, society's attempt to "civilize" us into rigid roles has plundered this treasure, and muffled the deep, life-giving messages of our own souls. Without Wild Woman, we become over-domesticated, fearful, uncreative, trapped.

I hope I can find my Wild Woman while reading this book full of mythical stories about women.

What book or books are you currently reading?

It's been a great week for reading. I read Gena Showalter's latest (The Darkest Passion) and Larissa Ione's latest (Ecstasy Unveiled). Now, I've just read the first chapter of JR Ward's latest (Lover Mine).

Hi BJ,

Sounds like great reads. Like Berinn, I'm also reading The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter. It's part of her Lords of the Underworld series. I highly recommend it!

Wow, BJ. Those sound fascinating. Excellent and interesting choices.

I'm currently reading three books at once. Not somethin I normally do, but I've only had snatches of time and I'm intrigued by all three. Two are fiction.

DARK FEVER by Karen Marie Moning. I am re-reading the first book in the Fever series and plan to reread the sequels to refresh my memory and in anticipipation of the last book, coming in December, I think. SO glad I'm rereadin because there are deatils I'd forgotten. Love it.

THE THIRTEENTH TALE by Diane Setterfiled. Different for me in that it has more of literary slant. But the story is fascnating and the writing style BEAUTIFUL. I am in entranced and awe.

Lastly, I just strated a non-fiction book. I SHOULD be reading non-fiction having to do with my WIP. But this one crossed the circulation desk at the library and caught my attention. I'm only a litle ways into and totlly hooked. It's called: IN THE PRESDIDENT'S SECRET SERVICE by Donld Kessler. (Behind the scenes with agents in the line of fire and the Presidents they protect). It's fascinating!

Right now I am reading Lover Avenged. It is one of the Black Dagger Brotherhood stories. I love this series.

I am so excited to hear that Lover Mine is out. Barb and I were just talking about who the next story would be about. We were right. We figured it would be john matthew's tale. I can't wait to get it!!

BJ,

Thanks for reminding me that I need to start reading again! I'm currently trying to finish two books at the moment. The first one is 'This House Is Empty Now' by Joseph Iorillo, which is -surprise- a gothic supernatural, and the other is a novel about some place named 'Eden' written by someone named 'Beth' something-or-other. I've only read the first three chapters and so far I'm disappointed that the aliens haven't shown up yet, no one's been haunted, and there are no cemeteries. I'll keep reading though, maybe it will get better. =0)

I've been overdosing on one of my favorite mystery series, Daisy Dalrymple, by Carola Dunn. But I decided to take a break from those last night and have started another fun mystery series, the Jane Kelly series by Nancy Bush.
