Awards Day

Thursday, June 3, 2010
Tuesday was awards day at my oldest daughter's school. I was surprised that there wasn't very many parents there for the fourth grade students. There should have been, because almost half of the kids made the A/B Honor Roll for the whole year. I thought that was very good. My daughter received 7 awards that day including the Honor Roll award. I am very proud of her for all the hard work she did throughout the year. You would think the Honor Roll award would be her favorite. Nope. It was the Spirit and Spunk award for "bringing joy and laughter to her class" that was her fave. I think she will always remember this award. I'll probably have to frame it for her.

My youngest daughter did good as well. She didn't lose a behavior stick all year. That is pretty good for kindergartner. She also was in a small reading group of children that were reading above grade level. They got to pick their own chapter books to read. I am very proud of her.

When I was in elementary school I received an award for Honesty. My teacher made the award just for me because I let her know that one of my answers on a paper was wrong. I had received an A+ that I didn't deserve. I will never forget that award, or the fact that the teacher made the award just for me. It made me feel very special.

Do you have any childhood awards that you will always remember?

I can't remember any awards I won in school, but I ALWAYS won an award for most books read in the library's summer reading program. :)

I can only remember two, both from elementary school. I won the 5th grade Spelling Bee in my school and I also won a kite contest for keeping my kite off the ground the longest. God I was such a dork!

Hi Tori

Sounds like me in the summers. I used to read a lot on summer break. Never got an award for it though. Now I'm jealous.

Hi Krys

What's wrong with a Spelling Bee award. I think it's great. Do you still fly kites? I'm not good at it at all.

Hi BJ

Nothing really wrong with it, I remember being proud of it at the time, and quite a few other 5th graders were not happy, so that was a plus =0)

I think that was probably the last time I flew a kite, actually. I don't know if I could still do it or not.

Hi BJ,

I won quite a few awards during the solo/ensemble singing competitions. I was so proud of them. I remember one year I won POW-WOW. To this day I remember practically floating on air. Can't say I ever won an honesty award. Way to go! I didn't know that about you.

Tell your girls I'm proud of them too!

In my elementary years I won a few triKappa awards for art, and in high school I won a couple of 1st place ribbons in the artshows. In my senior year, I got a special certificate from my English teacher for receiving the highest score on my final exam, but I feel that wasn't fair because everyone else was so glad to be graduating that they didn't try very hard. I'm sure there were plenty of them that could've beat my score if they'd studied.

Congrats to your daughters! They sound like great students :)

Hi, BJ!

Congrats to the girls. So proud! And I love that story about you and the Honesty Award. How special is that?

One of my first awards, that I remember anyway, was a ribbon from the 4-H Fair. I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I showed my pony Topsey. It was the sulkey cart competition. I think I recall Mom and grandma in the stands shouting, "Keep going!" I think I had to do a certain number of laps around the track. I'll have to ask Mom if she remembers. Anyhoo, somewhere there's a picture of me with that ribbon and Topsey.

In school, like Elle, I won some awards for solo and ensemble singing competions. I was thrilled!

Most recently and most special are the few awards I've won for my writing. I was a finalist in the NJRW Golden Leaf contest for ALL ABOUT EVIE. I attended the conference and was so touched that my editor took a train out from NYC so she could be with me. The way the announced winners of each category was by starting out reading an excerpt from the winning book, before announcing the author. My editor held my hand as they announced the finalists.... It turned out there was a tie for first place. Then the announcer started reading the first excerpt. She was two or three lines into it before I realized it was MINE! My editor squeezed my hand and smiled... and of course I started crying. What made it ultra-special is that I tied with Jim and Nikoo McGoldrick (writing as Jan Coffey). I've known Jim and Nikoo for years and they are the nicest people ever. It was a thrill of a lifetime. :)
