RT.... Sort Of

Friday, May 7, 2010
I had every intention of writing a fabu post about my Romantic Times adventures. Unfortunately, I came home and spent the entire week playing catch up. I'm still scrambling, so.... the fabu post is forthcoming. Meanwhile I'll share a couple of pictures. I didn't take any, but got these from a couple of friends. First up, me as a flamingo in Heather Graham's dress rehearsal for her Mystery Musical--Spellbinder. That's me in the foreground. Flamingo #1, along with fellow flamingos, authors Alex Solokoff and Harley Jane Kozak. Explanation.... forthcoming.
Later in the week, I appeared at the humongous bookfair as, well, me. Hank Schiffman, an amazing photographer and huge book fan, snapped this shot of me. I don't consider myself photogenic so I was super thrilled by this pic. Thank you, Hank! Editor buzz from the convention.... What they're most looking for? Sexy historicals and dark paranormals. More juice.... forthcoming! Meanwhile.... what's the craziest costume you ever wore.... in public?

Beth,

Great pics! You make a nice flamingo...

I haven't done anything too crazy. A couple of times I wore a cloak when I went to Jack's Place on Clearwater Beach to see Sequel. I remember one of the times there were a bunch of Green Bay Packer's fans in town and as I was walking into Jacks some of them turned to look at me and said "Oh no, it's a witch", to which I replied "Oh crap, it's Packers fans"

I can remember one year for Halloween I took a big cardboard box, cut the top and bottom out and put shoulder straps on it. A little paint on each side and voila, instant Rubik's Cube!

My wife used to work at the Holiday Inn in Indianapolis and they let their employees dress up for Halloween. She wore blue scrubs, a hairnet, gloves, and an apron with condoms and over sized pink and blue baby pins pinned to it. The word "midwife" was written on the apron with ketchup. And yes, she said I could tell you this.

When I was 18, I had a pair of capri's that were leopard print. They were my absolute favorite and I wore them all the time. Thinking back on it, they probably made me look like a hooker. Oh well, at least I thought I looked good.

Krys, I can picture your wife's costume. Very funny.

I can't wait to hear more! I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that they are looking for dark paranormals. I'd be interested in hearing more about that.

I love the jacket you're wearing in your picture. Oh, and you look okay too. Ha! Very nice picture.

My mind is drawing a blank. Can't think of a crazy costume I've worn. That could be because I hate dressing up.

Barb,

Do you remember they way you used to dress when you sang with Sequel?

Barb

Do you remember the pillow people?

And I'm equally thrilled that they're looking for sexy historicals!

Nice flamingo costume, Beth. *grin* I have no idea what kind of skit you were performing in, but I've got a big imagination that's conjuring up several possiblities.

You're right, Hank took a great photo of you. It sounds like you had a great time. Please do tell us more about the convention. Someday, I'd LOVE to attend one!

Oh, and about costumes... I've done several makeup videos and demonstrations. Some of them have been pretty extreme. And I always dress up for Halloween. Usually as a vampire, witch, or some other dark creature of the night.

Great pics!

I can't think of any crazy costumes either.

Krys,

Ever heard of duct tape? Use it!

BJ,

Yes! I loved the pillow people. Do you remember how it's done? Have any pictures?

Krys, those are awesome costumes. I especially love the Rubics Cube. What a hoot!

BJ, Can't imagine anyone mistaking you for a hooker.... although I haven't seen you in those leopard tights. Hee! Just kidding. I bet the looked great. Cyndi Lauperish-style!

Uh, Barb/Elle... Didn't I see a pic of you on FB dressed as a Teddy Bear? Or am I dreaming?

Barb/Elle, I got that jacket on the Spiegal website on sale. Three-quarter length swing coat. I love it! And yes, many editors are still mega hot for paranormals. Most leaned toward dark, although Kensington was open to light-hearted paranormal if done well.

Alyson, you've gotta make RT one year. A lot of workshops but also a lot of fun parties. Lots of dancing! Oh, and cover models. As for Sexy Histricals... yup, very much in demand. Although some editors were hoping to see something other than the Regency Time Period. I can't remember. What period are you writing?

Tori... Did you trick-or-treat as a kid? Any fave costume memory?

The good news is that I'm not writing a Regency! lol But, to be honest, Beth, I think mine's going to be hard to place, because it dates in the late thirties, right before the WWII. I already know that some of the publishers require their historicals to be set BEFORE 1900. All I can do is try to stay optimistic and work my patootey off polishing it to perfection.

This past week I sent out some queries, hoping to get a headstart.

Me and Elle are sharing a deadline. She's a fantastic CP:)

I can attest that Beth makes an absolutely adorable flamingo. She is also terrific at physical comedy -- like Lucille Ball back to life. For someone who knows squat about sports, she had the wiggle moves down perfectly.

Looking forward to flamingo explanation and more news from RT, Beth! As for the craziest costume I wore in public, I, um, don't have one.... Glad to have you back, btw!
