First Concert Memories

Friday, July 17, 2009

I will never forget my first concert. It was the summer of 1984. My dad dropped me off at the entrance and I quickly found my friends. It was an outdoor concert so we were able to get close to the stage while we eagerly waited for her to make an entrance.

Cyndi Lauper, with her crazy hair and funky outfit, finally came out. I remember screaming like the girls who now scream for The Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus. After the concert, I could barely talk after singing along to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, She Bop, Money Changes Everything and all the rest.

Now, when I hear Cyndi Lauper on the radio, it brings back such great memories of that summer in 1984 when I got to see my teen idol in concert.

HI BJ!

Great post and reminded me of my first and then later concerts. Believe it or not, I think my first concert was Coolio! Not great memories because someone sprayed pepper spray in the audience. (my first experience with that too) I thought I was going to die. Couldn't breathe, kept coughing and I was getting crushed by the crowd! Not fun.

However, every single country concert I've been to, Rascall Flatts, Sugarland, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley and any others I can't think of right now, were absolutely amazing!!!! I love concerts where I know every song!

Hi Barb,

I remember seeing Coolio at one of the Lollapalooza concerts. Do you remember the one you went to with me?

I think the only country concert I have been to is The Charlie Daniels Band.

My first concert was to see Styx's Kilroy Was Here tour. What a blast that was!

Fun country concerts over the years were Sawyer Brown and Alabama. Needless to say I haven't been to a concert in YEARS. *g*

First concert: Elton John, "Brown Dirt Cowboy" Tour, 1975 --- AWESOME start to my concert-going "career"!! I "tagged along" (much to her dismay!) with my big Sis (she was a Senior in HS; I, a lowly Sophomore) and her boyfriend at his request, knowing how much I loved Elton. I was blown away by not only the scope of the visuals (of course including EJ's outrageous costumes which he was still sportin' at that time), but in a BIG way by how good that grand piano sounded! Intrigued in watching EJ have a temper tantrum in the middle of a ballad (stormed off stage, etc.); then by his "bouncing back" and rockin' the stadium through the third encore!
Thanks for stirring the memory, B.J.!

My first live concert...I was working with a promoter in the DC area and we put together several several country music concerts. I think the fun thing was being able to talk to the stars and the after hours jam sessions were an eye opener.

Concerts that I paid for that meant something to me? Ottmar Liebert and Leona Boyd.

I took my son Jake to his first Rock Concert for his 14th birthday and we saw Papa Roach, Avenged 7,Saving Able. It was fun, if a bit deafening, to watch his expressions and see him sing along. He'll not forget it. Now if we can find Nickelback...

I think my first live concert was Bobby Sherman at the Cherry Hill Arena. I'm pretty sure I saw him before I saw the Supremes at Steel Pier in Atlantic City. I could be wrong.

Other early concerts when I was 14 were The Grass Roots and then Chicago, both in the summer again at Steel Pier.

Ahh the memories! Great music AND the High-Diving Horse.

Sorry about all the spelling mistakes. I have a 5 year old running around driving me crazy.

Sydney, One of these days your mom will take you to a concert. If not, I will when you are a little older.

Love You, Aunt B.J.

Hi everyone.

So sorry to leave BJ hangin' this weekend. I went "camping" and there was no internet service. I actually got the lame stare when I asked about WiFi. Oh well.

Great concert memories from all, except of course, Sydney. But no worries, we'll get her to one soon!

BJ, I remember lallapalooza, but I can't remember who we went to see. Mostly, I just remember people watching!

Thanks so much for sharing!!

BJ,

I saw Cyndi Lauper in concert a couple of years ago. 50-some years old and she's still rocking! She was amazing!!! And I loved her new twists to her old songs. I vaguely remember calling Brenda on my cell phome and making her listen to Time after Time, not that it probably sounded all that great over the phone!

My first concert... I think... was Oliva Newton John on her Let's Get Physical tour. I think I was 20-something at the time. A concert late bloomer. Anyhoo, I thought she was awesome. Call me a popster!

Black Oak Arkansas, Las Vegas, 1973(?). A screaming Southern Rock metal group. The lead singer wore a huge sock in his leotards, the speaker stacks on each side of the stage were two stories high, and the marijuana smoke was so thick in the auditorium that I got high without lighting up.

Two different sides of BOA:

The lady in Jim Dandy is Ruby Starr. Anyone know her stuff?

Most recent concert: the very sedate James Taylor.
