As children, we all had dreams. It was simple. We knew what we were going to be when we grew up, what type of person we'd marry, number of kids, number of pets and where we'd live.
That's the beginning of our journey and the road is long with several twists and turns along the way. Some of our dreams came true while others didn't or haven't yet. But yet, we still dream.
This ties into Bren's Bucket List. Dreams are still dreams but as adults we have more control over whether or not they'll happen. In my opinion, we don't always need to dream big. Sometimes the little things are all we need.
I'd like to share a couple of my dreams with you, some big and some small, and how I hope to achieve them.
1) Move south or at least have a 2nd home in the south. how? Work very very hard and save, save, save!
2) Renovate our current home and in the process get my very own writing room! how? Work very very hard and save, save, save!
3) to be a published author. how? work very very hard and cross my fingers.
4) be a better mother. how? practice breathing techniques, lead by example and sometimes...just walk away.
So, you see, dreams are hard work! Very seldom do they just happen. We have to work very, very hard to get what we want and then hope that the cards will be in our favor.
Please share one of your dreams with us and how you will achieve it.

A phrase I heard a LOT in a "just OK" Anthony Hopkins movie I watched recently, though it has been used a number of times elsewhere, is also one of my mantra (is the plural "mantrae"? Can you HAVE more than one mantra? Anyway...) "What one man can do, another can do." That pretty much sums up my attitude towards "dreams." I don't really HAVE dreams anymore -- I have GOALS. They are as unattainable as I make them --- they are not unique in the history of Man, they are only unique to MY history. They come to fruition, as you said in your "how to get them" words, Barb, as quickly as I put forth the required effort and concentration. Could I BE independently wealthy before the end of the year, let's say, were that one of my goals (it's not, really, by NORMAL definition. "Wealthy" to me, these days, simply means not having to sweat finances so much every day!)? MAYBE not, but I DO have direct control over how many steps, projects, efforts I complete in ATTAINING that goal before the end of the year.
Yes, dreams/goals are hard work. Agreed, they RARELY "just happen." For me, though, I find that it's better to not hope the cards will be in my favor --- I like to stack the deck:)!
One of my dreams/goals is to be published. And I know I'm my own worst enemy in achieving that. Must. Work. Harder. It isn't like I have anything better to do!
Richard,
Well put and you're right, goal would have been a better word choice than dream. Here's to stacking the deck!

Tori,
I know you are working your butt off. Stay the course! I know you can do it!

Pretty much what you said. Even dreams that seem to drop in my lap still require work. Case in point, my son. After about 6 miscarriages, there he is. Lot of wear and tear on the heart prior and ditto after along with...you got it, work, work, work. None of which I regret.
Published? Not yet but I'm doing the whole work and learning and more work. It's achievable. My work ethic is give it your best, follow through, and, as I've learned, nothing is impossible if you vision it clearly and work to make the vision reality.
Good article Barb!
All I'm going to say is that one of my biggest dreams is to see a great white shark out on the big, wide ocean someday. And sooner or later, this dream is going to come true!!
Hi Sia! I'll say you worked dang hard to get that wonderful boy of yours! Tell him I said he better be nice to you.
I like that you mentioned learning in regards to your writing. That is so true. I learn more each and every day. You have to be open to it and when you are the rewards are immeasurable.

Um Taylor,
You meant from within a steel mesh cage, right?
My wish for you is that you don't get eaten in the process! LOL. Seriously though, go for it Taylor! You can make that happen.

Barb,
I guess I have several goals I would like to achieve. Highest on my list is to help my children grow to become extremely happy, responsible, respectful, decent, hard working men. So far, so good. The way I'll achieve that is to just keep trying to be the best Mom I can (I'd like to be the perfect Mom, but we all make our mistakes!) and to stay aware of their needs and give them support and encouragement along the way.
Second on my list is to first, write and complete the best novel I am capable of at this time. After that, I'll work on getting it published. This is something that I am confident I will achieve! And you're right. I must work very very hard to make this dream a reality. And you will too!
SIS Bren
Bren,
Your boys are amazing so you're obviously doing a good job there.
And since I've had the pleasure of reading parts of your novel, I have no doubt in my mind that I will find your name on the shelves of Borders, Barnes and Nobles and all the book stores in between.

Barb,
Forgot to mention that this blogpost was written wonderfully! I imagined it as the opening passages of a novel - what a terrific intro to a story! You should work off these first few lines and form something greater!!
Wow Taylor! That is a huge compliment. If I was there I would give you a huge bear hug! Thank you so much.
