Quotes

Wednesday, July 21, 2010
I came across these quotes about writers and writing and thought I would share them with all of you.  Enjoy!

I keep six honest serving men. (They taught me all I know); Their names are What and Why and When and How and Where and Who.

- Rudyard Kipling

Agatha Christie has given more pleasure in bed than any other woman.

- Nancy Banks-Smith

Make'em laugh; make 'em cry; make 'em wait.

- Charles Reade

The pen is mightier than the sword.

- Edward Bulwer-Lytton

This morning I took out a comma and this afternoon I put it back again.

- Oscar Wilde

What I like in a good author is not what he says, but what he whispers.

- Logan Pearsall Smith

Take care of the sense and the sounds will take of care themselves.

- Lewis Carroll

Every human being has hundreds of separate people living under his skin. The talent of a writer is his ability to give them their separate names, identities, personalities and have them relate to other characters living with him.

- Mel Brooks

The beginning is easy; what happens next is much harder.

- Anonymous

Writing is easy: all you do is sit staring at the blank sheet of paper until the drops of blood form on your forehead.

- Gene Fowler

Your manuscript is both good and original; but the parts that are good are not original, and the parts that are original are not good.

- Samuel Johnson

Writing is a solitary occupation. Family, friends and society are the natural enemies of a writer. He must be alone, uninterrupted and slightly savage if he is to sustain and complete an undertaking.

- Laurence Clark Powell

The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shockproof shit detector. This is the writer's radar and all great writers have had it.

- Ernest Hemingway

Which of these quotes speak to you?  Do you have any to share?  My favorite is the quote from Gene Fowler.  It really made me laugh.

Hi Bren!

Love these. Gene Fowler's has always been my favorite, but I also really liked these two:

Make'em laugh; make 'em cry; make 'em wait.

- Charles Reade

This morning I took out a comma and this afternoon I put it back again.

- Oscar Wilde

All great comments, but Logan Pearsall Smith really nailed it for inspiration.

Hi Elle,

I loved the Oscar Wilde quote as well. I can definitely relate to that one. I don't know how many times I do that or something similar.

Hi Mary,

I think Mel Brooks really nailed it. At least for me anyway. I always knew I had lot of people living inside me.

Hi Krys,

Thanks for contributing. I loved them all, but I think I enjoyed the quote from Elmore Leonard the most.

Hi Tori,

I liked the Agatha Christie quote also. It amazes me that considering how much I love mystery novels, I've only read a couple of her books. I must remedy that!
