Fiction as Fact

Saturday, July 24, 2010

To those that know me well, it's no secret that when I do read for pleasure I usually prefer to read something supernatural or paranormal. I have been interested in both of those, in novels and real life, for as long as I can remember. From playing Dungeons and Dragons in my childhood to my first exposure to magick and witchcraft in my teens, the supernatural and paranormal have always fascinated me.

Of particular interest to me are the creatures themselves. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, demons, you name it. I am fascinated by every aspect of them, from how they developed throughout human culture and history to how it could be possible for them to exist in reality in today's world. Which brings me to my point.

My wife asked me last night how I would feel if I was suddenly faced with undeniable proof that vampires and werewolves really existed. Would I be be intrigued and want to know more? Would I run for the hills? I honestly didn't know at first and had to think about it for a little while before answering. In the end I decided that it would be both for me. I would be fascinated to know more about them but would also be very leery and cautious.

How would you feel if you were to discover that the mythological creatures you've read about were real? Choose any creature(s) that you identify with.

Hi Krys

I love all things occult. Werewolves, Vampires, Faires( seelie or unseelie), Mermaids, Selkies,Banshees, Unicorns, and Dragons. I would love to meet them all. I think I would be both terrified and fascinated.

BJ,

The Banshee, Unicorn and Dragon would be very cool to meet in person, as long as the Dragon wasn't hungry! In the spring and summer we have dandelion puffs that float through the air and I swear it's really easy to imagine that they're sprites or fairies.

I would love to discover that unicorns exist, right down to a gild of gold on their horns. What a delightful thought!

Mary,

Nice visual, and I agree unicorns would be fascinating!

Krys,

I think I would be greatly fascinated. I suppose I would try to sneak around the more dangerous types and watch them in action. But their senses being so intune, I'm sure I would be found out and become a victim.

But if these creatures really did exist and we were able to study them, wouldn't they lose some of their "specialness"?

Brenda,

Yes, I do think if they did exist and were studied they would lose that. I think it's human nature to want to understand something regardless of the consequences. And then there would also be the discrimination that's also inherent in human beings when they don't understand something.

Wow, unicorns! Now that's something that I would love to have as fact in my world. :)

While I've always been fascinated by vampires, I don't think I could deal with them being fact.

As for losing their "specialness", I suppose they would a little. But, it seems that if you appreciate them as the fantasy, then getting to live out that fantasy would only add to their "specialness". :)

Thanks Brenda for the word of the day...specialness. :)
