Don't Hold Back

Monday, July 12, 2010

Happy  Monday to all!

I'm currently working on the tail end of my paranormal. I can't wait to get to those last two words. "THE END." It's not that I'm not enjoying the story. It's just that I want to be able to say I completed it. SIS Beth sent me a link yesterday that really inspired me and gave me some ideas for not only getting to the end but making it more interesting. Many of you are familiar with the Romance University site and after reading this post: Paranormal Romance: Hot or Not, I know I'll stop by more often.

What I learned most was that I can't hold back. If I have an idea, even a crazy one, I should go with it and see where it leads me. Authors are coming up with amazing characters in the paranormal realm and I want mine to be just as fantastical, just as amazing! So I've now given myself permission to be a little weird, a little bizarre and a lot crazy.

How about you? Do you hold back in life or do you allow yourself to let loose? Writers: When you've gone a little crazy do you find it makes for better writing?

Elle,

You've hit a topic and a characteristic I enjoy in others but not so much in myself. I'm a firm believer that even when one cuts loose, one must still have a sense of control. Otherwise chaos results. :-(

Must be my age, my birth order and my motherhood.

I probably hold back a bit in life. I'm braver with my characters. I want them to get into trouble. The bigger then better. Unlike Mary Jo, I don't mind a bit of chaos. For my pretend people -- though I do have a bit of chaos in my real life too.

Outside of my little cubicle, I think I let loose. I want to enjoy life as much as possible. As far as writing goes, I love to see when an author goes "out there" with something completely unique and original. Now you have my curiosity piqued, Elle!

Mary Jo,

No chaos, hus? Actually a lot can be said for that and I think it is motherhood mroe than age. Curious about birth order. Where do you fall?

Edie,

Characters getting into trouble? Love it. Makes for tons of fun and an interesting read.

Berinn,

I know you let loose! yee-haw! Anyone who can fly a plane is a brave soul that loves to take chances. And since I've read some of your work, I can say that you do the same with your characters!

So glad you found the link inspiring. Romance University runs a lot of interesting articles!

I think I hold back a litle in life, but I think that's due to my quiet nature. That's not to say I don't challenge myself though! Depends on the situation.

I try not to hold back in my writing. If I feel it, I write it. I can always temper it later if need be. By not holding back, I've stumbled into some very interesting places with my characters.

I wrote a recurring serious gay relationship in a connected 'straight' romance trilogy. It was kind of risky, but Rudy and Jean-Pierre ended up being quite popular with many readers.

In my latest, OUT OF EDEN, there's a real seedy aspect to the story. Probably also a little risky and I did second guess myself, but in the end I decided not to hold back and I think it's one of the strongest/most emotional threads in the story.

I say.... go for it, Elle!!

Beth,

Having read OUT OF EDEN, I for one am glad you left the seedy aspect in. It really worked in the story and also had the advantage of adding those more serious moments that we as readers like to have from time to time.

Um, just so you know...YOU'RE NOT THAT QUIET!

Elle,

My birth order? Oldest of six.

Mary Jo,

Interesting. I'm number 5 of 7. It's nice to know other people that come from large families. Many may not understand the dimensions.

Gonna have to check out that site.

I find when I let myself just flow with what comes it makes for better story. Granted, there are times when my brow raises and I'll go, "where the hell did that come from?"

Sometimes I do find myself holding back, though.

Be sure to send up a flare when you do type, THE END. :-)

Interesting topic, Elle. I tend to hold back a little when I write. Call me cautious. The style of writing that I'm doing right now takes careful precision and accuracy as far as details are concerned. On the other hand, when it comes to the relationship between my hero and heroine, I can let my imagination flow, and there have been quite a few things happen that took me by surprise - almost like the characters wrote them instead of me.

Your current story is fantastic, Elle. I've NO doubt that it'll go far! And the idea for your contemporary coffee story sounds fun and zany. I love reading stories that make me laugh out loud, and you have a great sense of humor.

Sia,

I enjoy those "where the hell did that come from" moments. It makes life that much more interesting.

Don't you worry. I'll not only send up a flare, I'll do smoke signals, fireworks and a bullhorn!

Alyson,

Due to the material you're covering, I think that being cautious is a good thing. I'll add a few other words. Careful. Considerate. Compassionate. Chemistry.

It's not that you hold back. Not at all. You're treating your story with the respect it deserves.

Thanks for the compliment on CLOAKED. I'm so happy I get to share the experience with you.
