Circus City Days

Thursday, July 22, 2010
The small town I live in is known for its amateur circus. Every July local children perform amazing feats like the trapeze, high wire acts and many more. Not only is the circus going on, so is the festival. Half of downtown is closed off and they set up rides and vendor booths on the streets. I have been to our circus only a couple of times. Three hours of sitting on hard bleachers is not for me. If it was a little shorter I would go every year.

My favorite part of the festival is the food. Elephant ears, The Lions Club tenderloins, lemon shake ups, corn dogs, and of course cotton candy. Good thing I only go for one night. Imagine if I ate all of that every night for a week.

My girls love the rides of course. My oldest will go on anything, the faster the better for her. My youngest would rather go on something very slow. I still love the fast rides and use the excuse of not wanting my oldest to ride alone so I can enjoy them as well.

What about you? Do you like the circus, rides and fair food? What are your favorites?

BJ,

I miss Circus City Days. I believe that next year they will be holding my high school reunion (year not disclosed) at that time. If this is the case, I will be attending. I've haven't been to any of my reunions, but I really think it would be fun.

Now, folks, believe it or not, this small town that we grew up in actually holds a title. And one we are proud of: "Circus City Capitol of the World"!
I was in California once and heard about our small town on the news. I couldn't believe it. Peru, IN made the news all the way out on CA!

Your circus sounds so nostalgic and creative!!!

The only circus I've been to is the huge Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey's.

Our town has a September Fall Festival. It's kicks off with a parade of old/show cars, bands, groups, floats, and teams. My daughter's cheerleading squad always rides in a haywagon. The festival serves delicious food along with several rides and activities. It doesn't sound as interesting as your circus, but it's still fun.

BJ,

When I was a kid the circus used to come to town every year and I went several times. As I got older I became aware of animal abuse issues that this particular circus had and stopped going. I've been going to Ren Fest for many years and last year went to a Strawberry Festival here in Florida.

As far as fair food goes, it's all good! I love elephant ears, cotton candy, caramel apples, kettle corn...Okay, now I'm hungry. The only thing I haven't tried yet is fried ice cream and fried candy bars. Yes, I said fried candy bars. Snickers, to be exact.

One day I really hope to be able to go to a Fall Festival in a state that actually has Fall and knows how to put on a Festival. We have a few here that are put on by local churches but they're pretty lame. Just the thought of a going to a Fall Festival in a small town up north during actual fall weather gives me warm fuzzies.

I met some people this week that came from Missouri to watch the circus. Believe it or not, there was an episode on the Rockford Files that had a had a character from Peru,IN. Of course they made us seem like backward folk.

Hi Alyson,

Fall is my favorite season so I love festivals during that time of year. I love haywagons even though they make me itch.

We have fried twinkies at our state fair. I haven't tried one yet.

I would love to go to Salem, Mass. for a fall festival. They really get into Halloween there.

Ren Fest is always fun.

BJ,

That would be perfect! My wife and I have been to Salem but it was in June. Not even close to Fall.

Hi BJ,

I love fair food too, but luckily I have enough will power (usually) to pass it up. Although, tonight I'm making tenderloins...breaded and deep-fried for everyone else, but I'm cooking mine in just a bit of olive oil. (I'm sure it won't be near as good, but oh well).

I saw that episode of Rockford Files with Grandma Childers. I thought she would pee her pants when they mentioned Peru.

Enjoy the festival!

I've got one thing to say.... Deep fried tenderloin sandwiches with pickles and mustard.

Oh... and I based the Apple Festival that happens in OUT OF EDEN on Circus City Days. Ah, the memories!

Have fun!
